چکیده
Abstract. Equatorial Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) associated with El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can influence the North Atlantic European (NAE) region. ENSO tends to be negatively correlated in winter, while this connection is less clear boreal spring and summer when teleconnection encounters altered background conditions (i.e., a weaker subtropical jet), which modulate signal on way NAE One such region that modulates tropical (TNA). While several mechanisms exist for modulation, we center our analysis Caribbean Walker cells. In order isolate relevant mechanism, force an idealized atmospheric circulation model three different seasonally varying patterns represent event or without of TNA, focusing decaying phase summer. We find spring, TNA primarily through propagating Rossby wave train, summer, TNA's strengthen over sector. Overall, study offers deeper understanding inter-basin interactions cell following central role SSTAs modulating

Collapse of the tropical and subtropical North Atlantic CO2 sink in boreal spring of 2010
Following the 2009 Pacific El Niño, a warm event developed in the tropical and subtropical North Atlantic during boreal spring of 2010 promoted a significant increase in the CO2 fugacity of surface waters. This, together with the relaxation of the prevailing wind fields, resulted in the reversal of the atmospheric CO2 absorption capacity of the tropical and subtropical North Atlantic. In the re...
متن کاملEnhanced Atlantic freshwater export during El Niño
Using two reanalysis data sets, the influence of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the surface freshwater balance of the Atlantic ocean is examined. We present evidence that the transport of water vapour out of the tropical Atlantic is enhanced during warm ENSO phases, while it is reduced during cold phases. These tropical changes alter the freshwater budget of the entire Atlantic drainage...
متن کاملSpring to summer northward migration of high O3 over the western North Atlantic
[1] Tropospheric O3 columns retrieved from OMI and MLS measurements, NO2 columns from OMI, and upper tropospheric O3 concentrations from TES over North America and the western North Atlantic from April to August 2005 are analyzed using the Regional chEmical and trAnsport Model (REAM). Large enhancements of column and upper tropospheric O3 over the western North Atlantic comparable to those over...
متن کاملSummer and spring ozone profiles over the North Atlantic from ozonesonde measurements
Ozone profiles obtained by near-daily ozonesonde observations during campaigns at several sites in the North Atlantic are used to construct time-height cross sections of ozone concentration through the troposphere. Strong day-to-day ozone variability on the scale of synoptic meteorological disturbances is found both in the spring and in the summer throughout much of the troposphere. Layers of h...
متن کاملSpring arrival of birds depends on the North Atlantic Oscillation
The timing of arrival of 81 migratory species in response to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) was studied at two Finnish bird observatories (1970 /99). Timing was determined for the first migrants and for the peak of migration, as well as for the early, median and late phases of migration, defined as the dates when the seasonal cumulative sum of birds reached 5%, 50% and 95%, respectively. ...
